Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina was a category three and four hurricane when it struck the city of New Orleans. Despite evacuation efforts, roughly 1,800 people died in New Orleans, and close to 1600 lived in the Lower Ninth Ward. The Lower Ninth Ward is a town that lies outside one of the major levees in New Orleans. When Katrina hit, the levee wall collapsed, causing thousands of gallons of water rushing into the town. The water crushed everything in its way, destroying houses and buildings. The water from the levees spread out throughout New Orleans. In some parts of the city, the water was ten to fifteen feet high.
New Orleans is slowly recovering from Katrina. The public schools are being upgraded, and test scores of students are starting to increase. The governments has been supplying jobs for people who have lost everything in the storm. There are only one third of the original 5,000 still living in public housing. The unemployment rate in New Orleans three years after Katrina was only 7%, which is lower than the national rate. The city has recovered 91% of its population from before Katrina.
Brad Pitt (Make it Right organization) On December 3, 2007, Brad Pitt commissioned 13 of the worlds most talented architecture firms to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward, the part of New Orleans that was most devastated by Katrina. Anyone who lived in the Lower Ninth Ward when Katrina hit and has returned has had Brad Pitt’s architects rebuild their homes at no charge. All of the houses are built at least eight feet off the ground, and most of the homes have driveways that are under the house. Every house has a solar panel on the roof, allowing the house to be 100% energy independent, and the house owner has the ability to sell the excess energy for a profit. All of the houses are 1,200 square feet with three bedrooms. Every Brad Pitt home is unique. Brad Pitt has pledged to contribute $5 million to help build the homes.
